Ah, Wilderness! is the world renowned dramatist Eugene O’Neill’s only comedy and captures his vision of an idyllic childhood in turn-of-thelast-century Connecticut.

Through this play we return to an idyllic age of Americana in Eugene O’Neill’s unabashedly romantic and sweetly funny Ah, Wilderness!

As the Connecticut-based Miller clan plans their traditional Fourth of July festivities, their dreamy-eyed middle child Richard is wrestling with cultural conventions, political uncertainty, the power of literature, and the exquisite pain of love. e memories of family life were never so delicately portrayed as in O’Neill’s aectionate comedy, his coming-of- age love letter to a simpler time.

As the world races towards catastrophe, a crowd of Mayfair socialites party their way to oblivion.

At its centre is David, who idles away his sober moments researching a futile book until the beautiful Helen decides to save him, shattering his marriage and learning too late the depth of both David’s indolence and his wife’s undeclared love. But with finances about to crash and humanity on the brink of global conflict, the drink keeps flowing and the revellers dance on.

Terence Rattigan’s masterpiece offers a subtle, witty unmasking of the hedonistic 20s generation and a devastating study of repression and the human heart.

This, he learns, was a mistake. He clashes with the head nurse, who is used to ruling with a rod of iron. Quickly, he takes over the yard and accomplishes what the medical profession has been unable to do for twelve years; he makes a presumed deaf and dumb Indian talk. He leads others out of introversion, stages a revolt so that they can see the world series on television, and arranges a rollicking midnight party with liquor and girls. For one offence, the head nurse has him submit to shock treatment. The party is too horrid for her and she acts with devastating consequences.

26-29 January 2011
What happens to children in the absence of love ? That is the question
that lies at the heart of this funny and heartrending play by one
of America’s most acclaimed playwrights. Lost in Yonkers is a
coming of age tale that focuses on brothers Arty and Jay, left in
the care of their Grandma Kurnitz and Aunt Bella in Yonkers, New
York. Their desperate father, Eddie, works as a traveling salesman
to pay off debts incurred following the death of his wife. Grandma
is a severe, frightfully intimidating immigrant who terrified her
children as they were growing up, damaging each of them to varying
degrees. Bella is a sweet but mentally slow and highly excitable
woman who longs to marry an usher at the local movie house so she
can escape the oppressive household and create a life and family of
her own. Her brother Louie is a small-time, tough-talking hoodlum
who is on the run, while her sister Gert suffers from a breathing
problem with causes more psychological than physical problems.
Missing much of the sentimentality of the plays comprising Simon’s
earlier Eugene trilogy, Lost in Yonkers climaxes with a dramatic
confrontation between embittered mother and lonely daughter that
creates a permanent fissure in this highly dysfunctional family.
Filled with laughter, tears and insight, this is yet another
heartwarming testament to Neil Simons talent.

Directed by Antonia Doggett, with Lighting Designed by Ian Irving and a Set Designed by Margot Traynor. The play was costumed by Kate McNeil.

Synopsis

Set in late-19th-centrury Russia, a domestic dispute over an inherited cherry grove sets the scene for Chekhov’s last play, a commentary on class struggle as old and new orders clash. This timeless drama evokes loss, longing, and the relentless passing of time.

Many of you generously donated your spare change to the charity collectors on your way in to the auditorium, helping to raise £304.48 for the Anthony Nolan Trust. The charity wrote us a letter thanking our audiences for their generosity, and hope you will check out their work as they continue with their efforts to find and support bone marrow donors.
