Giffnock Theatre Players proudly present Rona Munro’s “Bold Girls” and Alan Spence’s “Sailmaker” as the first plays of their 2015/2016 season.

It is a bold venture for the club to present two plays running almost simultaneously. During show-week, both plays will run on the same day, Sailmaker in the afternoon and Bold Girls in the evening. This means two sets of cast and backstage crew and two directors. The set design of the plays is ingenuous, allowing a quick yet complete set change between the matinee performances of Sailmaker and the evening performances of Bold Girls.

Both plays are Scottish National 5 texts. This is an ideal opportunity for school pupils to see the texts they study come alive on the stage. In addition, there are workshops for school pupils arranged to take place around the performances, hosted by the directors of the plays and when possible some cast members.

Whilst these performances present an excellent opportunity for school students who study the plays, the plays are of course hugely enjoyable for adult audiences and the shows are by no means intended exclusively for schools.

Rona Munro’s “Bold Girls” is set in war-torn Belfast in the early 1990s. Written with compassion and humour, the play follows a day and night in the lives of three apparently ordinary women. In the early evening, they are disturbed by the haunting appearance of a young girl; her strange presence forces some shocking truths to be unexpectedly revealed, never to be forgotten.

Glasgow’s own Alan Spence’s “Sailmaker” beautifully tells the sad and complex tale of an academically gifted boy and his struggling father. Set in Govan in the 1960s, the story begins with the initial impact upon both at the loss of the boy’s mother, and then follows the father and son through approximately ten years of their lives together.

Both plays will be performed at Eastwood Park Theatre in Giffnock: Sailmaker from Tuesday 27th to Friday 30th October 2015 at 2.30pm; and Bold Girls from Tuesday 27th to Saturday 31st October 2015 at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 31st;
Tickets for Bold Girls are priced at £13, with an £11 concession ticket available, as well as discounts for group bookings. Tickets for Sailmaker are priced at £6.
